Everything Is My Cellphone is an exploration into the inaccuracy of machine learning object detection in correctly identifying things. COCO-SSD, the object detection model used here, was trained on specific classes of objects which ended up identifying most rectangular objects as a ‘cell phone’. However, rather than resolving this issue through code, the issue is resolved instead through manually turning the objects identified as cellphones into “cellphones” by sticking on a post-it of a drawn dial pad. This absurd scene hence reveals the treachery of images when machine learning meets semiotics.
